Overview

Senior Web Engineer role at Canonical. Senior Software Engineer on the Web Engineering team; responsible for driving best practices, identifying risks, leading technical discussions, and delivering large projects. Location : remotely in the EMEA region. Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems. We value transparency, intellectual honesty and teamwork.

Responsibilities

Identify what matters for the team and drive initiatives to improve them
Design and implement well-tested and documented software
Debug and fix issues encountered by users
Lead engineering processes through code and architectural reviews
Contribute to technical documentation to make it the best of its kind
Seek improvements to engineering and operations practices
Deploy and operate services developed by the team
Contribute to product success through technical advocacy
Mentor and develop teammates in a structured and systematic manner

What we are looking for in you

Design architectural approaches that support business objectives and curate technical quality standards

Strong soft skills; values like curiosity, initiative, and accountability

Academic track record and / or compelling alternative path for Computer Science or STEM

Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative otherwise

Driven to go above and beyond with good organizational skills and ability to deliver to schedule

Experience researching new technologies and integrating modern approaches

Ability to provide comprehensive and insightful code reviews

Attention to accessibility and performance

Professional written and spoken English

Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)

Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability

Excellent communication and presentation skills

Result-oriented with personal drive to meet commitments

Ability to travel twice a year for company events up to two weeks

Nice-to-have skills

Experience with container tech such as LXD, Docker and Kubernetes

Experience fostering and maintaining a talented team by defining excellence

REST API design, development and governance

Drive to deliver performance engineering and security experience

Compensation reflects location, experience, and performance. In addition to base pay, a performance-driven annual bonus or commission is offered, along with a range of benefits. We revisit compensation annually to recognize outstanding performance.
